I'm a researcher and analyst
I'm a philosopher specializing in aesthetics and the philosophy of mind. I'm currently teaching at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in Vancouver, where I completed my PhD early in 2020. My dissertation, supervised by Dom Lopes and Chris Mole, focused on psychological features of our appreciative encounters with the world. Before I came to Canada, I completed my undergraduate and master’s degrees at the University of Stellenbosch in South Africa. I spent half a year of my masters at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (KUL) in Belgium. Recently, I've started thinking about mental agency and how to understand and model inquisitive attitudes like curiosity (in real and artificial agents). I also have an ongoing interest in working out a capabilities-based conception of aesthetic well-being, and in finding ways to operationalize aspects of our access to aesthetic goods, so as to make it more tractable for purposes like policy-making and systems design. photo by Jonathan Jenkins Ichikawa, 2014
